There are a few schools of thought when it comes to Power Factor Correction Capacitors. Some recommend installing fixed capacitor banks at your main service entrance to improve your power factor and lower electric bill. This has advantages and disadvantages depending on the application. If you are trying to just eliminate power factor (PF) penalties on your electric bill this method would suffice provided the need for the amount of capacitance you were going to add was present all the time.
