Power Factor Correction

There are a few schools of thought when it comes to Power Factor Correction Capacitors. Some recommend installing fixed capacitor banks at your main service entrance to improve your power factor. This has advantages and disadvantages depending on the application. If you are trying to just eliminate power factor (PF) penalties on your electric bill this method would suffice provided the need for the amount of capacitance you were going to add was present all the time. If you only run your facility a certain amount of hours per day a fixed bank might not make sense because it would leave the reactive energy on the circuit even when it was not needed. This would not only be wastefull but would reduce the expected life of the capacitors.
